How to Install a Custom Wrap in Tesla Paint Shop (USB Guide, 2026)
Step-by-step: format the USB drive, name the Wraps folder, meet the PNG size limits, and load your custom wrap into Toybox → Paint Shop on Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck.
What Tesla Paint Shop custom wraps actually are
Since the 2024 Holiday Update, Tesla lets you change how your car looks on the touchscreen — not the real paint. Paint Shop lives in Toybox and ships with a handful of built-in colors and wraps. The custom wrap feature adds one more option: a PNG you drop on a USB drive, which the car projects onto its 3D model using the official UV template for your exact body style.
The template is the key. Tesla publishes one per vehicle in the public custom-wraps GitHub repository. Anything you paint on the white areas shows up on the corresponding panel; everything else is ignored. SkinMyCar generates wraps directly on those templates so they line up on the first try.
File rules the car enforces
Most "my wrap does not show up" problems come from one of these rules. Check every line before you plug the drive in:
- Format: PNG only (JPG and WebP are ignored).
- Size: square, between 512 × 512 and 1024 × 1024 pixels.
- File size: under 1 MB. Compress with the free "Paint Shop PNG" export in SkinMyCar, which resizes and quantizes until it fits.
- File name: up to 30 characters, letters and numbers only, no spaces or emoji.
- Folder: a folder named exactly "Wraps" at the root of the USB drive.
- USB drive: exFAT or FAT32. Do not use the drive that holds TeslaCam/Sentry clips or map files.
Step-by-step
Once the file is right, the install takes about a minute:
- 1. Open SkinMyCar → Studio, pick your Tesla body style (for example Model Y 2025 Premium or Cybertruck) and generate a wrap. Download the "Paint Shop PNG" version.
- 2. Plug a USB drive into your computer, format it exFAT, and create a folder called Wraps.
- 3. Copy the PNG into Wraps. Rename it if it is longer than 30 characters.
- 4. Plug the drive into a USB port in the car (front console ports work; glovebox port works too).
- 5. On the touchscreen tap the car icon → Toybox → Paint Shop → Wraps. Your file appears alongside the built-in wraps.
- 6. Tap it. The visualization updates on the center display and in the summon/parking views.
Which vehicles are supported
Tesla ships a template for every body style currently in production plus the refreshed Model 3 and Model Y variants: Model 3 (2017–2023), Model 3 Highland (RWD/LR and Performance), Model Y (2020–2024), Model Y Juniper (Base, Premium and Performance), Model Y L, Model S (2021+ and 2025 Plaid), Model X (2021+) and Cybertruck. Older Model S/X (pre-2021) are not supported by Tesla.
Each body style has a slightly different unwrap, so a Model 3 wrap will not line up on a Model Y. Always download the template for your exact trim; SkinMyCar picks it automatically when you select the vehicle.
Troubleshooting
- Wrap not listed: check the folder name (case matters on some builds), the PNG extension and the 1 MB limit.
- Wrap listed but looks stretched or shifted: it was painted on the wrong template. Regenerate for your exact trim.
- Colors look washed out: the car applies its own lighting. Slightly increase saturation and contrast, or use the satin/gloss presets in the Studio.
- Transparent areas showing black: export with alpha preserved (PNG-32). The SkinMyCar export keeps the template alpha automatically.
